Cooking Traditional Kosher Dishes : Chop Onions to Make Cholent

Hi I'm Karen for Expert Village let's start with cutting our onions and our garlic first cut the tops and the ends off our onions and cut them in half like this when you cut the end off you want to make sure you don't cut off the root section it will help us when where chopping to have it all holding together, the root section holds the onion together And just peel off all those brown outer leave and now to cut an onion you want to leave that root section on and we're going to make several slices like this 1, 2, 3, 4 and then again on the top but don't cut all the way through, stop right here and slice slice down so that the onion is still held together by the root section

And now if we cut straight across here we get a perfect dice and you don't have so much of that onion vapor that makes you cry And it's rather quick and then you can either chop up the root section or toss it away now we'll put that in there of course you still get a certain amount of onion vapor Okay and again you could also do the slices this way but do not go all the way down cause the onion falls apart and it's difficult to cut the onion, now we're doing we're cutting it this way across and I'm doing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 , 6, 7 cuts and then slicing straight across and you repeat that with the second onion
